A Typography Sandbox: Setting the Mood

Typography is the physical voice of your text.

When you write in a default sans-serif font, it feels like writing a corporate email. When you write in a tight, compressed monospace, it feels like writing code. The choice of layout, font weight, line spacing, and page scale directly dictates how your thoughts flow onto the screen.

The Rhythm of Spacing

  • Font Scale: A slightly larger font size (like 16px or 18px) reduces eye strain, helping you focus on the sentence structure rather than individual words.
  • Line Height: Setting line height to 1.6x or 1.8x the font size gives sentences room to breathe. It helps you see the shapes of paragraphs organically.
  • Page Margin: Having narrow, centered text columns mimics the look of a printed page, keeping your eyes from scanning too far left and right.

Designing the Atmosphere

Underleau includes a dedicated typography sandbox where you can toggle font presets (such as Cozy Serif, Classic Typewriter, and Modern Sans) and adjust margins on the fly.

By adjusting these layout properties, you can design a screen environment that fits the mood of your story. A mystery novel might call for a tight typewriter monospace, while a poetry collection demands a spacious, soft serif.

Choose your setting. Set your mood. Write your truth.
