The core Underleau editor is completely free forever. Your files are stored locally on your hard drive, and you can write, edit, and export to markdown or PDF without ever paying a dime or creating an account.

The Pro tier provides secure, remotely accessible backup of your local files to our cloud storage infrastructure. This means if you lose your computer, your files are safe. Beyond that, it also gives you access to the web app, enabling you to write regardless of the machine you are using, as long as it has a modern web browser and an internet connection. It also enables future cross-device synchronization.

You can cancel your subscription at any time directly from the settings menu in the application. Your account will remain Pro until the end of your current billing cycle, after which it will revert to the free tier.

Since Underleau is local-first, your files always remain on your hard drive. If you cancel Pro Sync, we simply stop backing up new changes to the cloud. You won't lose access to any files you've already created.

Yes, we offer a 14-day free trial of Pro Sync so you can test out the cloud backup functionality. You won't be charged if you cancel before the trial ends.

If your payment fails, we'll notify you via email and in-app notifications. You'll have a grace period to update your payment information before your subscription is suspended.

We do not currently offer any educational discounts, but we are actively looking into it for the future. If and when we do, we will be sure to let everyone know via a blog post and our social media and of course the answer to this very question will be updated, so check back in every once in a while if you're interested!

Our refund policy is simple. If you believe you've made a mistake signing up for a paid Underleau subscription online or in-app, please contact us inside the app or via email at subscription@underleau.com. We'll be happy to refund you the full amount (not pro-rated) if you downgraded your subscription within three days of signing up for monthly billing, or within 30 days of signing up for annual billing. If you have accidentally added members to your workspace, you can remove those members at any time. If you’ve been charged for members who were accidentally added, we're happy to provide a refund of the prorated charges if you reach out within three days of the invoice date (please make sure the additional members have been removed from your workspace when writing in). If you live in the European Union, United Kingdom, or another region with a mandatory refund policy, you may be eligible for a monthly subscription refund past 72 hours. For example, customers in the European Union can receive a full refund for a monthly subscription within 14 days of purchase, rather than 72 hours. No, you do not need to provide any payment information to download and use the free desktop application.
